Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

FWPFIR4001 - Conduct tree hazard assessment post-fire

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for work in bushfire recovery operations

  1. Maintain up-to-date information on topography, hazards and weather conditions in bushfire recovery area
  2. Maintain situational awareness in bushfire recovery area
  3. Follow health and safety environmental protection practices and/or procedures, including use of personal protective equipment and hazard and risk control measures, relevant to bushfire recovery operations
  4. Confirm chain of command and communication protocols that apply in bushfire recovery operations

Identify, mark and isolate tree hazard

  1. Conduct hazard assessment of route to and areas around tree to determine it is safe to approach
  2. Determine location and position of tree in relation to site topography and other hazards at site
  3. Establish risk to self and others posed by tree hazard and other factors in immediate vicinity of the tree
  4. Mark tree, if safe to do so, using spray paint according to industry guidelines and agency approved symbols
  5. Isolate tree with barrier tape according to industry guidelines and agency approved procedures
  6. Assess visually extent of fire damage to crown, trunk and root from the appropriate safe distance
  7. Identify structural and physiological defects in tree
  8. Assess external factors that may cause tree or its limbs and branches to fall
  9. Determine risks posed by tree according to workplace procedures
  10. Identify tree hazard class according to industry guidelines and agency approved procedures
  11. Identify potential environmental, cultural and economic values of tree and, where required, consult with appropriately qualified person on risk treatment options
  12. Determine appropriate risk treatment to mitigate tree hazard according to industry guidelines and agency approved procedures
  13. Record and report outcomes of tree assessment to appropriate personnel
